UPCOMING PROJECTS AND EVENTS

Root Down LA Soil Remediation

On August 27, 2022, RootDown LA is hosting a soil improvement project at George Washington Carver Middle School’s garden. Volunteers of all ages and skills are invited to help us complete a soil remediation and learn about our local air quality. Soil remediation involves removing contaminants from the soil, which will improve air quality and soil quality, helping the garden and the local community.

PAST PROJECTS AND EVENTS

Ballona Wetlands Restoration

The Friends of the Ballona Wetlands is dedicated to protecting and restoring Los Angeles’ last coastal wetland. By restoring these important ecosystems, we help improve our air quality, water quality, habitats for many species, and so much more! Time and effort put into clearing out invasive vegetation gives our slow-growing native plants room to thrive.

Lopez Urban Farm Tree Planting

Lopez Urban Farm is hosting a tree planting event where the following trees will be planted: 2 Desert Museum Palo Verdes, 4 California Bay Laurels, 2 Western Redbuds, and 2 Black Elderberry trees all in 15-gallon container size. Volunteers will contribute to the expansion of Pomona’s urban forest, help improve the local air quality, and provide a cool place for the community to enjoy shade during the hotter summer months coming as a result of climate change.

Community Urban Gardens

Eco Urban Gardens is hosting a volunteer event at Rosemead High School focusing on two main projects: the completion of a Vegetated Bioswale and the foundation of a Greenhouse. Eco Urban Gardens is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to combat food insecurity through urban agriculture and regenerative living. They teach students to grow their own food through their engaging farm to school program to help students feel connected to the environment and learn how these systems work.

Earth Day Tree Planting

Pico-Union is one of LA’s most diverse and economically challenged neighborhoods. Located between the intersection of Pico Boulevard and Union Avenue immediately west of Downtown, Pico-Union is the fourth-most-dense neighborhoods in all of Los Angeles with over 40,000 residents. Often overlooked, Pico-Union lacks adequate green space and tree canopy, subjecting the community to poor air quality and extreme heat during the hot months.
